Computacenter and IBM Tackle the Impending European General Data Protection Regulation

Computacenter logoIn May 2018, a new law from the EU will pass called the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR. This legislation will have vast implications for both organisations and customers because the issue at hand is nothing less than big data management and security. In an age and economy where big data is the currency, the proper protection of digital information has real and significant value for businesses that are constantly aggregating exponential amounts of data, as well as for the individuals whose data is out there being circulated.

Computacenter, working in concert with IBM, understands the vital importance of data protection compliance, which amounts to GDPR compliance, not only for the purpose of shielding data from hackers, but for enhancing the efficiency and agility of businesses whose trade is in handling big data. So why GDPR? The European General Data Protection Regulation isn’t just another roadblock to technological progress. As Computacenter sees it, it can actually be a big step forward for business leaders that embrace data privacy compliance as a way to approach not only security, but also organisation and management, in order to improve and sharpen overall performance and carry their companies into the future.

While some may balk at the idea of having to adjust to the imminent requirements that the implementation of the GDPR will inevitably demand, Computacenter and IBM encourage business leaders to view this as a golden opportunity to streamline and develop better strategies for handling data that will place their organisations on the cutting edge of technological advancement, as well as raise their share value by engendering greater trust and mutual respect amongst their customers and employees. As Greg Campbell, Governance, Regulatory, and Legal Consultant for IBM, states, “You need be able to access the data and report on it quickly and reliably. You need to know your data and where it resides. That takes operational methodologies that are streamlined and reliable. Putting those in place has the potential to improve the efficiency of your organisation, enabling you to deploy processes and technology that can help to make you more productive. You will have taken important steps towards knowing your organisation’s data better, and with proper implementation, it will be more agile.”

May 2018 is coming, whether we like it or not; why not face the changes that the GDPR represents head on and accept the challenge willingly, focusing on the benefits and positive outcomes your business will see if you approach data security and protection from the standpoint of not just a duty to those whose data you hold, but also as a chance to further enrich and advance the technological capabilities that are within your business’s reach. Computacenter, Europe’s leading provider of IT infrastructure services that enable users and their businesses, is there to advise you and help you through every step along the way.

Computacenter’s User Experience Approach Emphasizes the Importance of Human Technology

0
0

Computacenter logoWe are living in a digital age. Most companies and organisations today employ various technologies to function in the digital economy. While a constant advance in technology is important to be sure, it’s the people using that technology that are really at the heart of the matter. Computacenter, in collaboration with Intel, believes that human technology is what businesses should focus on when introducing new digital tools because without taking a people centric approach to user adoption of new technologies in the workplace, companies may lose out on investments and employees.

Paul Bray, Chief Technologist in Workplace and Mobile sectors at Computacenter, explains the importance of taking a user experience approach, saying, “If you choose the wrong product, or your users reject it, you may end up paying ongoing costs for something that isn’t being used.” That is why, when rolling out new workplace technologies, businesses must implement appropriate user adoption strategies. Computacenter can help put the emphasis on this user centric attitude, which is all about making technology work for people, rather than the other way around.

The people of today’s workforce, especially recent college graduates, are less and less likely to accept the divide that has traditionally existed between personal digital technology and digital work tools. More and more, the technologies in the workplace must be as seamless and easy-to-use as those we use all day every day. By implementing more agile, attractive tools in the workplace, businesses can better attract and retain talent—and talent is the lifeblood of any organisation. Intel’s Director of Business Solutions, Jim Henrys, argues for the importance of understanding the work styles of employees in order to introduce new technology in a way that invites them to move with the change, rather than against it. He says, “People like to work seamlessly and hassle free. It’s what enables them to focus on their talents and their objective. That’s how they become happy and productive. But, if you can’t help people change, then simply throwing technology at them won’t make a difference. You need to work on mindset.”

By taking a people centric view when looking at the way technology gets integrated into organisations, and focusing on user adoption as the end goal of the introduction of any new digital tool, businesses can anticipate not only more collaboration across and within departments, but enhanced overall productivity and creativity. That’s what today’s business world should be about. According to Mr. Henrys, “It’s clear that companies need to design their workspaces and work practices to enhance the power of people working together. Technology enhances that collaboration, but it doesn’t make it work. People do.”

Abuse Monitoring and Business Intelligence with mambo+

0
0

The continuous improvement of mambo+, the simple and user-optimized business intelligence tool for domain portfolios, goes on. The enhanced abuse monitoring offers compliance with Spec 11 3b of the ICANN registry agreement. Further to that, mambo+ now provides additional business intelligence functionality for registries, registrars and registrants.

By analysing technical information and usage data of domain names the users gain important insights for operative and strategic decisions. Thereby, mambo+ helps to improve services, to determine the demand and market potentials of new functions, and last not least to enhance reputation and customer support. Besides these improvements a lot of further innovations have been added to mambo+. The user interface has been redesigned to become even more comfortable, and a new app (for iOS and Android) has been developed which provides instant user notifications on mobile devices about new or omitted abuse cases.

Another technical innovation is the new smart mambo+ bulb. These LED Bluetooth bulbs signal status updates of domain abuse cases within a domain portfolio, hereby supplementing the automated reports and e-mail alerts that mambo+ provides out of the box. This allows to respond to domain abuse cases even quicker.

The first public presentation of the smart mambo+ bulbs has taken place at the ICANN meeting in Copenhagen from March 11th to March 16th. There, interested registries had the possibility to get sample devices for free.

Architectural Lighting and Sound Installation at the Milan Design Week offers a New Vision of Nature

0
0

The Italian architect Raffaella Laezza presents at this year”s Milan Design week an architectural installation with innovative lighting and sound design named “In Absentia_Bio Parco Sonoro_Piazza Castello Milano”. The project is part of the “White in the City” event and will be shown at the Salotto delle Divinità of Palazzo Cusani, Brera, from 4th to 9th April. International engineering, planning and consulting company Arup created the sound solution for this installation.

The contemporary vision of science enables a new perception of nature. It allows the creation of new geometries inspired by vegetal growth that can be transferred into architecture and design. Raffaella Laezza”s architectural installation consists of a white cube with 4,50m x 4,50m x 4,50m that represents the sacred dimension in nature. Wooden rods known as verticals of light enlighten the space and reliefs on the walls representing verticals of sound turn it into a natural audio environment.

The verticals of light create 121 different gradations of white light, which – when projected on the ancient vault – reinforce the impression of the location”s verticality. The variety of white lights represents the diversity of nature.

In the white cube is a constant faint sound, the so-called white noise, produced by the verticals of sound. This sound is modulated by the presence and movement of the people in the room who interact with the space and, in doing so, reproduce orchestra sections of a classical Italian music composition. The acoustic concept represents the inevitable interdependency of animated nature. It was created by Arup”s German and Dutch acoustic teams. The sound system was provided by Revolution Acoustics.

“The installation “In Absentia_Bio Parco Sonora_Piazza Castello Milano” is a further development of a recent competition entry for the renovation of Piazza Castello Milano. Due to its close and at the same time abstract relation to nature, it is a perfect addition to the “White in the City” event at this year”s Milan Design Week.”
– Raffaella Laezza, architect

“The architectural installation represents a geometric code for nature. It was a challenging experience to develop a sound concept that reflects the geometry of the movement of the vegetal growth process.”
– Francesca Coppa, senior sound engineer, Arup Berlin

Digital Workplace Transformation, Workforce Diversity & The Agile Workplace

0
0

Computacenter logoA short while ago, it may have been acceptable for technology used in workplaces to be less intuitive and more clunky. There was a status quo divide between workplace technology and that used in everyday life, which was often more fun, sleek, and easy-to-use. But people aren’t accepting this status quo any longer and the divide is shrinking. Yet, it’s not just about new technology; it’s about a new mindset. Digital workplace transformation isn’t just about upgrading to better systems; it’s about changing the culture of the workplace so that employees feel compelled to embrace new digital tools, inspired to use them. Computacenter and Intel have come together to present a new people-first approach to user adoption, with a focus on managing workforce diversity.

When technology is challenging and frustrating, it hinders the work people want to do. As Intel’s Direction of Business Solutions Jim Henrys says, “As soon as you need to think about how to use the technology, it becomes a barrier.” In today’s competitive marketplace, people simply won’t stick around; they’ll move onto a situation that better suits their needs. Computacenter’s Group Service Innovation Director Steve Rayner argues that it’s all about presenting digital tools in the right way. He says, “it’s important to develop workplace solutions as if the users [your employees] have a free choice about whether they will use them or not. And they do have a choice: they could use their own [introducing the challenge of Shadow IT], or they could simply leave for an employer where they can work the way they want to.”

An agile workforce means a diverse workforce. Maintaining that diversity means that companies must get technology to support the work people do, rather than forcing them to submit to it. Business leaders need to understand the needs of their people and that they will adopt new digital platforms at different speeds, according to what they are most comfortable with. Everyone needs help learning and adopting new technology; it’s not about digital natives versus digital novices. Director of Communications, Engagement, and Education at Computacenter Tessa Swithenby explains, “A technology-centric approach is self-defeating. A people-centric approach is liberating. People understand that they are at the heart of the strategy, and so they invest their time and talents in achieving it. By focusing on people, the organisation makes it clear that the technology is there to serve them, not the other way around.” Managing diversity in the workplace means carefully considering the ways people want and need to work and presenting new solutions in a way that upholds that. Diversity in the workforce means a broader talent base, which in turn means more productivity, efficiency, and creativity across the entire organisation.

With the Hornetboards the Wolfsburg Sascha Mattiza conquers the world

0
0

The search has finally come to an end for Sascha Mattiza. A manufacturer is enthusiastic about the technical details of the inventor Sascha Mattiza and will produce the Hornetboard Hyper. The electroskateboard provide an output of 8 KW and is by far the most powerful in the world. For the Hornetboard, top speeds of up to 54 km/h (34 mph) and gradients of 50% are also possible for heavy-weight drivers up to 120 kg (240 pound). Up to now there are no strong and fast boards in the worldwide market. “I have not discovered a strong and fast board in the market, which meets my high requirements,” explains the snow and surfboarder the basis of his Hornetboard.

Although it is so stable, the Hornetboard shows only two centimeters extremely flat and light. The whole technique is built into the board. Modern lithium technology, tamed by a battery management system, makes this high-performance board a true lightweight. Only seven kilograms (14 pound) brings this electromobility wonder to the scale and is therefore significantly lighter than normal electrocateboards, which are much heavier with up to 40 kilograms. Another plus: the driver can simply clamp the light board under his arm and go shopping.

“With this board, I have developed a true rocket without compromises. With this board you can enjoy electrocats on every meter, “explains Mattiza enthusiastically, adding,” it is not a mountain too steep and no speed too slow. The board runs really fast without overheating as fast as you like and it depends on it. No matter whether it is on the contrary, whether it is a headwind or a heavy rider. ”

To buy, the Hornetboard will soon be available at Startnext.de, a crowdfunding platform of Kickstarter’s German offshoot. If you want to know when it’s time, just register as a fan at www.startnext.de/hornetboardhyper. If the campaign has enough fans, the funding can start and after reaching the funding goal, the manufacturer immediately begins to produce. “The Board is at the customer’s disposal within three months. Thanks to the manufacturer’s cooperation, there is a variant at the introductory price of 799.00 Euro, “explains the founder of Hornetboards. The model comes with two engines and 3 KW power. The cooperation also has many advantages: the latest 3rd generation of the Hornetboard not only displays engine temperature and battery capacity in the remote control, but also allows you to select different driving modes, which double the driving pleasure at the push of a button!

Since 2014, meteocontrol has been getting a growing demand from Asian market players who are looking for monitoring and yield assessment solutions. Moreover, the Asian market is currently the largest global expanding market in the solar industry. meteocontrol has asked Reuniwatt to provide them with real-time estimations (also called “nowcasts”) and intraday forecasts for their Asian portfolio. Indeed, Reuniwatt has a known expertise in satellite data treatment, necessary to obtain such services. The French company has access to real-time raw satellite data issuing from five geostationary satellites covering all continents: Himawari-8 for Asia-Pacific, Meteosat-10 for Europe and Africa, Meteosat-8 for the Indian Ocean and the Middle East, GOES-East for North and South America, GOES-West for the Pacific islands.

Satellite data are available in near-real time: every 10 minutes for Himawari-8 and every 15 minutes for the other satellites. Reuniwatt”s operational method for providing nowcasts and intra-day solar forecasts is based on the most performing techniques to convert satellite images into solar irradiance maps.

“We are absolutely convinced that meteocontrol”s solutions are essential for all asset owners and we are very proud to accompany such a market leader on their Asian adventure” said Reuniwatt CEO and Founder Nicolas Schmutz.

“We are happy to provide our Asian customers with the high quality forecasts from Reuniwatt to ensure grid integration of PV power in this important market” said Robert Pfatischer, Managing Director of meteocontrol.

Allemansrätten – Beautiful Sweden is free for all

Sweden is a beautiful country, its four distinct seasons a joy in their own right. The allure of Swedish nature is all around you, from the magical Northern lights when you look up onto the sky, to the cloudberries that speckle the moss with a soft shade of orange, and the clear blue waters of the 95,700 lakes covering 9 percent of the land. And the best thing is, it’s free for all to enjoy.

You see, in Sweden, there’s this thing called “allemansrätten”, which translates into the freedom to roam or everyman’s right. Basically it means that everyone is allowed to spend time in nature as they see fit, even on private property. One can camp under the open air, hoping to catch a glimpse of those Nordic lights swooshing across the sky, pick as many cloudberries as one’s stomach can handle, and both swim and fish in the many lakes scattering the Scandinavian country best known for its social democracy and ABBA.

Growing up in Sweden, this is all a normal part of life. Spending time outdoors is so natural, that nature’s accessibility is often taken for granted. This is, however, often not the case with foreign tourists visiting the country. Especially people from the US, who are used to seeing threatening signs like: “Private property, keep out!”, are amazed when they hear about the Swedish freedom to roam. Sometimes, they even have to double check – just to make sure their hearing isn’t playing a trick. Because, yes indeed, they can hike wherever they want, pick whatever they want, and sleep wherever they want.

Unfortunately, however, not many tourists have discovered the joys linked with the freedom to roam, and a majority still hit up the fancy hotels in the capital, and cultural hub of the country – Stockholm. And while Sweden certainly has a lot of offer to urbanites and culture lovers, the natural beauty of the countryside – and its easy accessibility – still, somehow, remain a hidden gem.

So the next time you visit Sweden, maybe just pack a light backpack with hiking boots, a sleeping bags and the bare necessities. You can pick berries along the way, drink the cleanest water you’ve ever tasted directly from the river streams, pick a campsite when you get tiered, light a fire and sleep under the stars. And it won’t cost you a penny, as long as you respect nature and treats her with the respects she deserves.

Prime Minister of Sweden lists “throwing sandwich” as one of top five things to do in Swedish nature

The Prime Minister of Sweden, Mr. Stefan Löfven, now makes an official comment to the initiative where the entire country of Sweden was listed on Airbnb. He also takes the opportunity to add his own personal top 5 things to do in the Swedish nature.

21 June 2017: In a comment Sweden’s Prime Minister, Mr. Stefan Löfven, praises the Swedish nature as well as the freedom to roam:

– Sweden’s grand nature in combination with our freedom to roam is one of our greatest assets when it comes to being a great country to visit. Visit Sweden is working hard to get more people to see the benefits of traveling to Sweden for recreation or adventure.

Mr. Stefan Löfven also lists his top 5 things to do in the Swedish nature:

  1. Having a glass of wine with my wife Ulla, watching the dramatic coastline of Höga kusten near my hometown Örnsköldsvik.
  2. Walking in one of Sweden’s grand forests, in its simplicity it’s very relaxing.
  3. At my summerhouse in the North of Sweden, nature is in my backyard and it can really clear your mind chopping some wood in the morning.
  4. It’s not only about being in nature, it’s also what nature gives. For example Swedish cloudberries, also known as the gold of the North. Try it with a waffle and some ice cream.
  5. Stone skipping at a beautiful lake or as we say “Kasta macka” (throw a sandwich).

Visit Sweden, Sweden’s official tourism board, on the 22nd of May, listed the entire country on Airbnb. The initiative, which gained global attention, was aimed at highlighting the freedom to roam in Sweden and attracting tourists to experience the Swedish nature. The initiative “Sweden on Airbnb” was made possible thanks to the freedom to roam, a Swedish right guaranteed by the constitution that allows people in Sweden to experience nature and enjoy the beautiful Swedish wildlife for free. The only thing you have to pay is respect for the nature and the animals living there.

About the freedom to roam

Sweden’s freedom to roam concept is based on a constitutional guarantee known as the Right of Public Access, which is a unique institution. The literal meaning of the Swedish term of the Right of Public Access, allemansrätten, is ‘everyman’s right’. It provides anyone living in or visiting Sweden the freedom to roam just about anywhere in the countryside as long as there is no disturbance or destruction of property or the environment. Many Swedes regard the Right of Public Access as part of a cultural heritage, sometimes even as a national symbol. Its origins go back in part to provincial laws and customs dating from the Middle Ages.
